Kapitel • • • • • • • An der Oberfläche mancher gibt es Anhängsel, die deutlich kürzer und starrer als sind. Diese sogenannte Pili oder Fimbrien sind röhrenförmige Gebilde und bestehen aus Pilin-Protein. Die Pili bedecken die bakterielle Oberfläche in der Regel rundherum und in großer Zahl. Einigen Bakterienarten dienen Pili oder Fimbrien als Haftungsorganellen (Adhäsine). Pili ermöglichen es ihnen, sich an die Membran einer Wirtszelle (z.B. Schleimhautzelle) anzulagern, indem sie spezifisch an Membranrezeptoren der Wirtszelle binden. Größere Pili (sog. Sex-Pili oder Konjugationspili) dienen Bakterien auch als Anheftungsorganellen und ermöglichen es zudem, über die röhrenförmige Verbindung Erbgut (z.B. Plasmide) zwischen zwei Bakterienzellen auszutauschen.
